Our belief is in good horsemanship (which some call “natural”). Horsemanship involves so much more than riding, contrary to what some helpers have thought.
Because we have more horses (all our own) than some livery (pension) yards, you can get involved in learning, if you do not already know, many aspects of managing a horse yard and horses right up to running the yard. This is very hands on and you will learn from doing. Unlike, what we are told by various helpers from their other experiences, you will be actually handling, and working around and with the horses. Most are boxed at night and we use the deep litter system of bedding, with straw. Our horses are expected to be polite and respectful and we expect the same from helpers to our horses. We want you to be involved in all aspects.
Within a limited acreage we run two small herds, so you can learn by observation about herd behaviour. We have two dominant stallions (ex but still in their heads) who run them, with one herd having an alpha mare.
We are western riders and our discipline is trail as we live in such a fantastic trail riding area. Don’t expect to go galloping or racing our horses, the terrain has a lot of rocks and our philosophy is barefoot, which works for our horses.
We do however go to Western riding lessons/training sessions at Reinhill Ranch http://www.reinhill.com: volunteers are generally welcome to come with us and participate when possible. There is a cost per session paid direct to the ranch.
